Integrating Distributed On-premises Linux Back-ends With Scalable Azure Web Infrastructure for Real-time Seismic Data Distribution
Modern seismic monitoring requires the seamless integration of high-availability data acquisition with scalable public-facing distribution channels. This architecture bridges on-premises Linux-based Earthworm and ringserver environments with a containerized Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) web platform. The back-end infrastructure consists of specialized Linux servers, hosting Earthworm instances and ringservers to ingest real-time data from station sources and partner networks. These systems maintain critical services including Winston Wave Servers and FDSN web services, exporting data through secure modules to a centralized staging pipeline.
The publicly available "QuakeMap" web page utilizes Microsoft Azure to address high-concurrency demands. The page is designed to serve hundreds of emergence responders in an authenticated section, but also handle the general public's 50,000 requests per second during an incident. This cloud-based front-end integrates two primary data streams: real-time station peak ground acceleration generated by the on-premises Linux servers, and alert notifications from the USGS Product Distribution Layer (PDL). The PDL stream provides metadata and partner notifications from the National Earthquake Information Center, US Regional Seismic Networks and the Tsunami Warning Centers. Leveraging AKS, SignalR, and CDN integration, the system ensures low-latency delivery to emergency responders and the general public across mobile and desktop platforms, demonstrating a robust model for scaling geophysical data from research tools to massive audiences.
