WITHDRAWN Assignment of Macroseismic Intensity Values in the Field After the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş, Turkey Earthquake Sequence

WITHDRAWN Macroseismic intensity evaluations are vital after large earthquakes to assess the impact and severity of the seismic events. Despite being more localized and subjective compared to the internet-based alternatives involving questionnaires, traditional on-site intensity assignments are still valuable to understand the extent of earthquake-induced damage. Turkey still predominantly employs the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale for the rapid evaluations after the earthquakes to manage emergency response activities. In this study, damages to structural, geotechnical, and lifeline systems in the large region affected by the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş, (Turkey) earthquake sequence are assessed, incorporating the source-to-site distances, local site conditions and measured ground motion levels as well. The MMI map from field observations are then compared with DYFI maps and digital maps prepared with ground motion to intensity conversion equations. We also discuss challenges and uncertainties related to microseismic intensity assignments with potential remedies. Such efforts in the long run can prioritize response efforts, allocate resources more effectively, and plan for future preparedness and mitigation strategies.
