Early Earthquake Detection With Elasto-gravitational Waves
Description:
Earthquakes and the propagation of their generated seismic wavefields redistribute mass within the Earth, producing perturbations in the gravitational potential. These gravitational fluctuations travel at the speed of light, much faster than seismic waves. If detected by gravity gradient sensors, the gravitational signals can provide early warning prior to the arrival of damaging ground motion, enabling protective actions for critical infrastructure and saving lives. Toward that goal, here we introduce the Torsion Pendulum Dual Oscillator (TorPeDO), a gravity gradient sensor that is under development, and explore the feasibility of using it to measure prompt gravitational transients due to earthquakes and propagation of elastic/acoustic wavefields. We will briefly describe the construction of the TorPeDO and its response to earthquakes, with a focus on its sensitivity to earthquakes source parameters which are key for an early warning.
