How to Learn an Industry in 10 Days! Utilizing Qualitative Methods to Build Industry-specific Expertise Within the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning Technical Engagement Team
Description:
Since 2016, ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) has been promoted to organizations, businesses, and institutions that could make use of seconds of warning prior to potentially strong earthquake shaking. The ShakeAlert Technical Engagement team is tasked with communication, education, and outreach activities that raise awareness, adoption, and impact of EEW. Prioritization of EEW implementation has been centered around industries and sectors that are the most vital for safety and resilience: schools, emergency response operations, healthcare facilities, and utilities are just a few. The Technical Engagement team has embarked upon a series of research projects that utilize qualitative research methods to reveal key information about critical industries. As a result, in-depth knowledge about each industry is collected and contained as a resource for anyone in the ShakeAlert Technical Engagement community.
In this presentation, we will review the Critical Sector Implementation Project (CSIP), designed as a collaborative research project to give the Technical Engagement team expertise in the industries where ShakeAlert can be most effective. We will discuss the conceptualization of the project, its goals and activities, and the research methods employed for each industry. Attendees of this session will have a stronger understanding of how CSIP utilizes established methodologies and academic rigor in its understanding of critical industries and pursuit of EEW implementations. They will also learn key findings about industries such as live entertainment venues, industrialized communications, and water / wastewater facilities, and how this knowledge will inform the practice of ShakeAlert technical engagement going forward. Finally, the presentation will demonstrate how this in-depth research project elevates the knowledge base of the Technical Engagement team.
