Earthquake Early Warning Delivery Using Smartphones
Session: Earthquake Early Warning: Current Status and Latest Innovations Type:Oral Date:4/29/2020 Time: 08:30 AM Room: 115 Description:
Earthquake early warning is a new tool to reduce earthquake hazards and losses. It can provide seconds to tens of seconds warning before the strongest shaking strikes target locations. Delivery of the warnings to millions of users within a reasonable time is a key part of the success of an EEW system. In October 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom of California announced the launch of the MyShake app with the ability to deliver ShakeAlert earthquake early warning messages to the state of California. Within the first few weeks, there were more than 500,000 downloads. This talk presents an update of the MyShake system in delivering the EEW messages in CA.
