Considerations for a National Earthquake Early Warning System for Canada
Session: Earthquake Early Warning: Current Status and Latest Innovations [Poster] Type:Poster Date:4/29/2020 Time: 08:00 AM Room: Ballroom Description:
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is designing and planning a national Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) for operational use by 2024. The aim of NRCan’s EEWS is to mitigate the immediate effects of earthquakes and reduce both losses and recovery time. A proposed network layout, designed to protect the areas of highest seismic risk in southeastern and western Canada, has been created based on knowledge of earthquake distribution and on current EEW abilities and limitations. The layout has been evaluated against hypothetical national grids of sensors with varying spacing, by using a 100,000-year synthetic earthquake catalog equivalent to the 2015 Canadian national seismic hazard model. The evaluations demonstrate about 350 stations at circa 20 km spacing can form the core network, and they identify the benefits of additional stations.
