Canada’s Upgraded Earthquake Monitoring Network
Session: Regional Earthquake Centers: Highlights and Challenges
Type: Oral

Time: 05:30 PM
Room: 215 + 220
Description:
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) operates the Canadian National Seismograph Network (CNSN), consisting of approximately 200 stations. This network is responsible for earthquake monitoring in Canada. The refurbishment to this network, beginning in 2014 and nearing completion, provided significant upgrades to the sensors, infrastructure, and telemetry of the stations. In particular, 3-component broad-band sensors replaced all short-period vertical sensors, accelerometers were added to 60% of the stations, additional wide-dynamic-range accelerometers (without seismometers) were deployed, and improvements made to reduce maintenance and repair costs. All upgraded stations undergo a series of quality checks before the data are approved for dissemination. Data from this network are used to produce the national earthquake catalog, to provide rapid alerts in the aftermath of an earthquake, to develop the national seismic hazard maps, and for research within Canada and internationally. However, the network lacks the short latency required for earthquake early warning. Data from the CNSN are freely available to the seismological community and the general public.
