Overview of Technical Implementation and Approaches Used in Transportable Array
Session: Regional Earthquake Centers: Highlights and Challenges
Type: Oral
Date: 4/28/2020
Time: 04:30 PM
Room: 215 + 220
Description:
EarthScope’s Transportable Array has operated high quality, broadband seismic stations throughout the US essentially as a roving regional network and cooperated with all the regional earthquake centers in the process. We summarize a few technical improvements developed over the course of sixteen years that may be of interest to Earthquake Center operation or planning at regional scales. These include: Posthole sensor emplacement, advanced power systems, extensive communication experience with both cellular and satellite telemetry as well as state of health telemetry. In addition to technical developments, we review key procedures and approaches used when constructing and operating large numbers of stations. One example approach is Station Monitor (https://www.iris.edu/app/station_monitor/), originally developed with University of South Carolina and now expanded to all real-time stations at the DMC, that gives the public, in particular landowners or stakeholders, easily accessible views of data from a station as a way to maintain interest and enthusiasm for the station. A detailed publication of the design and implementation for Lower48 has been produced and a second volume related to Alaska is in preparation that will also be available on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/publications/proposals_and_reviews
