Analysis of Acceleration Time Series Recorded at El Castillo Building Upon the 7 January 2020 Puerto Rico M6.4 Indios Earthquake

The Puerto Rico Island is located in a region that is prone to significant natural hazards; the earthquakes are one of them. El Castillo Building is located in the city of Mayagüez, on the west coast of the island. The Building was instrumented in 2008, with a set of 24 accelerometers by personnel of the Puerto Rico Strong Motion Program (PRSMP) from the Civil Engineering and Surveying Department of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) and by personnel also of the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Acceleration records of the M6.4 Earthquake were recorded by 20 out of 24 of the installed accelerometers. The M6.4 earthquake, occurred on January 7 2020, was located offshore at ~8 km south of Indios Town of Guayanilla Municipality giving an epicentral distance to the building of ~50 km. Building characteristics will be described, and preliminary results of the acceleration time series analysis will be presented as well. The experimental Frequency Response Function is generated to obtain the behavior of the structure in the seismic event. The dynamic characteristics obtained are then compared to ambient vibration analysis preformed before and after the seismic sequence. For the top-to bottom building height, the acceleration of transversal direction at the roof is ~8 times larger than the one at the basement.
