Withdrawn: Volcano Hazards Monitoring of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon: Recent and Ongoing Improvements
The U.S. Geological Survey’s Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) is responsible for monitoring Washington and Oregon volcanoes. Nine of these volcanoes are classified as high- or very-high-threat by the National Volcano Early Warning System [Ewert and others, 2018] due to their eruptive history, range of hazards and potential impact to populations and infrastructure. CVO’s monitoring goal is to detect and correctly interpret geophysical and geochemical phenomena to provide early and accurate warnings of unrest, including impending eruptions. Since 2004, CVO has operated a regional volcano monitoring network and has worked in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) and with support from the UNAVCO Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO). Over the last 18 years CVO has significantly expanded the network and its monitoring capabilities, adding over 63 stations. The CVO regional network of real-time stations includes a broad spectrum of stand-alone and co-located monitoring instrumentation (seismic, infrasound, deformation, gas and cameras) with metadata and continuous data shared publicly in near real time at IRIS (ds.iris.edu/mda/CC) and the USGS Earthquake Science Center website (https://escweb.wr.usgs.gov/highrate-gps/). CVO is continuously developing more reliable and robust station design and infrastructure while also focusing on expansion of the network to under-monitored volcanoes. Expansions throughout the network have increased our ability to assess volcanic hazards in near-real time throughout Washington and Oregon.
