Withdrawn: Testing Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) for Seismological Monitoring Applications
The Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a recently developed technology that allows using fiber optics to obtain continuous dynamic measurements of the medium deformation state (strain), with resolution comparable to standard seismic equipment. In principle, the application to telecommunication infrastructures in urban environments could provide a convenient mean of performing continuous seismic monitoring over large areas and long distances with a single interrogation device and a few available optical fibers. DAS technology can then be used to complement standard seismological processing, e.g., to constrain the low-frequency ground motion in combination with geodetical observation from GNSS and satellite data.
The National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics – OGS, has recently performed an experiment of optical fiber interrogation in Udine (Italy), in collaboration with the Friuli Venezia Giulia autonomous Region and its inhouse company INSIEL S.p.A. During the experiment, the seismic wavefield was recorded continuously for ten days, at 200Hz and with 4-meter resolution on a 20km fiber dark optic cable. With the purpose of evaluating the quality of the DAS recordings, a temporary array of standard seismological equipment and geodetic GNSS surveys were installed along the line. Active and passive seismic experiment using vibroseis were also performed. During the acquisition, a few local and regional earthquakes have been detected, including a noticeable 5.1 event from Greece. Here we present the setup and the main results of that experiment, with a particular focus on the comparison between data obtained from the different monitoring approaches.
