Ground Motion Estimation in the Cities of Sagaing and Yangon due to Earthquakes Occurring on the Sagaing Fault
Description:
Myanmar is an earthquake-prone country because the it is located in the Alpide earthquake belt and also lies in the frontier zone between the Indian Plate and Eurasia Plate. The most active and longest fault in Myanmar, the Sagaing Fault (about 1200km long) runs north-south in the central part of the country and some large cities is located near the fault if not on the fault. Many large magnitude earthquakes have occurred along the Sagaing Fault historically, and it is anticipated that the seismic hazard is high in these cities that are close to the fault. Therefore, starting from 2014 we had made efforts to estimate the local site conditions by conducting surveys to get information about the subsurface velocity structure using microtremor and estimate the strong ground motion for scenario earthquakes occurring on the Sagaing Fault.
Arrary and single-point observation of microtremors were conducted in the cities of Sagaing and Yangon. First, the subsurface velocity structure is estimated from the Rayleigh wave phase velocity obtained from the array measurement using methods such as SPAC. Then, the Microtremor Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratios (MHVRs) are used to estimate the velocity structure at each single-point station. Finally, the strong ground motion is calculated for different scenario earthquakes occurring on the Sagaing Fault close to the two cities. This study was conducted in close collaboration with Prof. Myo Thant, Prof. Tun Naing, Phyoe Swe Aung, Yuki Hirokawa and Hayato Matsushita as well as others that participated in the microtremor observations.
