Tele-seismic Analysis of M7.7 Mandalay Earthquake using an L-shaped Ocean Bottom Sensing Network Enabled By Multiple Trans-oceanic Telecom Cables and Distributed Fiber Sensing
Description:
We report detection of tele-seismic waves from the M7.7 Mandalay (Myanmar) earthquake using a network of ocean bottom seismic sensors built using two operational telecom cables equipped with long-range fiber sensing systems. The fiber sensing system integrates the observed strain between consecutive telecom repeaters, providing strain measurements with a gauge length between 50 km and 100 km. The roughly L-shaped array covers the northern Atlantic ocean and is formed by monitoring the 1770 km IRIS subsea cable with 17 repeaters and a trans-Atlantic cable measuring about 6,500 km using around 150 repeaters. Neglecting poorly coupled spans, we obtain more than 100 ocean bottom sensors for seismic analysis. The observed wave field’s spatial coherence and good signal-to-noise ratio allows automatic picking of P, S and surface waves which we compare with travel times computed in a standard earth velocity model.
We show seismic wave propagation using coherent measurements over the entire ocean basin, complementing land-based stations. Our results show the first time a large magnitude earthquake was detected using an array of telecom subsea cable networks turned into seismic sensors, adding more than 100 measurement points on the ocean floor.
