The 6th Generation Seismic Hazard Model of Canada
Session: Forthcoming Updates of the USGS NSHMs: Hawaii, Conterminous U.S. and Alaska [Poster] Type:Poster Date:4/28/2020 Time: 08:00 AM Room: Ballroom Description:
Natural Resources Canada and its predecessors have been estimating seismic hazard in Canada for over 65 years and have developed a long-standing process of collaboration with the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) and Canada’s engineering community. The latest hazard assessment, the 6th Generation Seismic Hazard Model of Canada (CanadaSHM6), is scheduled for public release in 2020 and is currently proposed as the basis for seismic design values for the 2020 edition of the NBCC. The new model includes recent work in the areas of: recurrence of great subduction earthquakes, revisions in the geometry of deep in-slab earthquakes, inclusion of new potentially active faults and the adoption of new ground motion models. For the first time, hazard values are also provided for a continuous range of site conditions (Vs30) and Site Class, which expands the applicability of the results, removes the need for separate site amplification look-up tables in the building code and simplifies the way end-users will determine seismic design values.
